How involved are parents in the treatment of their teen?
If your teen is attending therapy sessions, parents may be asked to attend sessions as needed to meet therapy goals.
What is therapy?
Common goals of individual therapy include facilitating behavioral change, improving overall functioning, and enhancing quality of life. Through the therapeutic process, individuals can address maladaptive patterns, increase self-compassion, and develop a more integrated sense of self. Therapy provides a structured environment for building skills in emotional regulation, problem-solving, and effective decision-making. Additional goals often include increasing self-awareness, improving understanding of emotional processes, and processing unresolved or traumatic experiences to promote long-term stability and wellbeing.
How do I know if therapy can help?
Therapists can offer support, problem-solving skills, and coping strategies for a wide range of concerns. They can also provide a fresh, objective perspective on challenges you may have been struggling with on your own.
The benefits of therapy often depend on your level of readiness and engagement in the process. Many people experience increased self-confidence, improved self-esteem, better communication skills, and new or more effective coping strategies. Therapy can also help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself, shift unhelpful patterns, build healthier ones, and regulate your emotions more effectively.
You may find therapy particularly helpful if you are experiencing:
-
Persistent sadness, anxiety, anger, or other emotional difficulties
-
Relationship conflicts or disconnection
-
Difficulty sleeping or changes in sleep patterns
-
Declining school or work performance
-
A recent traumatic event or significant loss
-
Concerns about substance use
-
Thoughts of self-harm or suicide
-
Difficulty managing day-to-day responsibilities
If any of these challenges are impacting your life, therapy can offer support, clarity, and a structured path toward healing and change.
Are therapy sessions confidential?
Confidentiality is taken very seriously. No information will be shared with individuals or agencies outside of this practice unless you provide explicit written consent. The only exceptions occur if there are significant safety concerns—such as risk of harm to yourself or others—or when required by law. Your privacy and trust are essential to the therapeutic process, and protecting them is a priority.
